Just had to crawl under my LJ to bang on my starter, so it appears I’m due for my 2nd replacement in 2 years, just as I’m preparing for a road trip to the east coast.

Is there any such thing as a bulletproof starter? Something I can pay extra for to not have to go through this again any time soon?

I’m sure I could get a discount with my shop if I need to replace it twice a year. Good thinking!

not really, unless you get a brand new OEM part.  “reman” shit you get from the parts store is pretty much “we only replaced the components which failed, everything else we left in no matter how marginal.”

I have heard Mean Green is good; but I have no way to verify that.

I’ve had a mallet in my trunk for 4 years. This may be only the 2nd time I’ve used it.

I there's a local starter and alternator shop near they they might be worth checking out.  I've got one up North of me that does fantastic work rebuilding them that I trust over any reman out there a parts store can get you.  They're reasonably priced compared to a new OEM unit, but the catch is they take some time to order parts and/or make windings as needed once they've got your part disassembled and inspected.

Interesting idea. I can keep my current one after swapping it out and look for someone to tackle that.
